How to Properly Take Care of Yourself after Getting a Tattoo

User Rating

Getting a tattoo is not for everyone, but for those who have taken the plunge, a tattoo (especially a really nice or significant one) could be one of the better decisions they have ever made. Many people have one particular tattoo which has a unique relevance, whilst there are those who choose to have more than one tattoo as a means of expressing themselves. Whether you are the former or the latter, there’s one thing you need to do after getting a tattoo: take care of it in the proper way. Here’s what you need to know about properly taking care of yourself after getting a tattoo.

Tattoo aftercare

A good tattoo studio will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions once your tattoo is done. They can do so in writing and verbally, and the artist will make sure to answer any and all questions you may have regarding aftercare. Don’t hesitate to ask whatever questions or concerns you have in mind; it’s best to get it out in the open before you leave the studio, so you know how to deal with any emergency.

The tattoo artist can recommend a lotion or moisturiser to keep your skin moist and supple, as the worst thing for a newly-inked tattoo is dry skin. It’s important to make sure your skin is moisturised, and whilst you can do this with an ordinary moisturiser, there are special tattoo moisturiser products which have been designed expressly for tattoo aftercare, so you may want to use this instead of a standard or ordinary moisturiser.

Taking care of yourself

Taking care of yourself after you get a tattoo is also important. For one, make sure that you get plenty of rest after getting inked. Rest is necessary with any process of healing, more so with tattoos (especially if you get a large one). You should also make sure to drink plenty of liquids in the days following your tattoo and eat properly as well. Your immune system should be in top form for your body to properly heal itself, and you should nourish your immune system with lots of protein, vegetables, and fruit.

One major activity you should avoid is swimming in a pool or spending time in a bath or Jacuzzi. Your tattoo should be protected from bacteria in the first few days, so swimming in pools or soaking in a bath or Jacuzzi should be avoided.

If you want to celebrate with your mates after getting a tattoo, wait a few days. It’s advisable not to drink on the first night you get a tattoo, as this can inhibit your process of healing. Just wait several days and you can celebrate to your heart’s content without risking anything.
